Chinese proficiency is commonly assessed using the HSK (Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi) exam, which consists of six levels. These levels help learners track their progress in Mandarin Chinese.

HSK 1 – Beginner

HSK 2 – Elementary

HSK 3 – Intermediate

At this level, learners can handle basic interactions in everyday situations, express opinions, and read short articles on familiar topics.

HSK 4 – Upper Intermediate

Students can understand and participate in conversations on a wide range of topics, read news articles, and use Chinese effectively in work or study environments.

HSK 5 – Advanced

Learners can read and comprehend complex texts, engage in fluent conversations on abstract and professional topics, and understand Chinese media such as newspapers and TV programs.

HSK 6 – Proficient

At the highest level, students can understand written and spoken Chinese effortlessly, express themselves with precision, and communicate naturally like a native speaker.
